Tottenham market values: Five stars values soar as Man United gap closes by €85m
It’s been a positive start to Ange Postecoglou’s tenure at Tottenham Hotspur and their squad market value has slightly increased by €7.2 million to €754.8m in our latest update. Postecoglou enjoyed a dream start to his Tottenham career after moving from Celtic in the summer with the Australian boss collecting 26 points from his first ten games to take the North London club top of the table.
The 58-year-old collected three manager of the month awards in a row but injuries quickly derailed Tottenham’s season as they picked up just one point out of a possible 15 in their next five games but they've recovered well by picking up wins in their last two games. Eight Tottenham players’ values have increased in Transfermarkt’s new update, while eight have moved in the other direction and we’ve analysed the biggest winners and losers.
Tottenham’s top five market value increases
Guglielmo Vicario has excelled since joining from Empoli for €18.5m in the summer and he’s successfully replaced Hugo Lloris as Tottenham’s number one. Vicario’s value has soared by €10m to €30m as a reward for being one of the best goalkeepers in the league. The 27-year-old has kept five clean sheets in 17 games and he is pushing Gianluigi Donnarumma for a starting berth with Italy.
Micky van de Ven has been a revelation since his €40m arrival from Wolfsburg and his €5m increase ensures his value now matches the fee Tottenham paid for him. Van de Ven’s incredible pace has been vital to Postecoglou’s preference of playing a high line and he formed a promising partnership with Cristian Romero. Van de Ven sustained a serious hamstring injury in the disastrous 3-1 defeat to Chelsea and his absence was noticeable as Spurs’ form dropped off.
Dejan Kulusevski has started every game for Tottenham, contributing five goals and his value has increased by €5m to €55m. While he’s predominately deployed as a right winger, Kulusevski has impressed as an attacking midfielder in James Maddison’s absence and his versatility is an added bonus to Postecoglou. The Swede highlighted his importance to Spurs in the recent 2-0 win over Nottingham Forrest with a brilliant assist and goal.
Pedro Porro has enjoyed a renaissance under Postecoglou and he’s consolidated his place as Spurs’ first choice right-back ahead of Emerson. After missing the opening day draw with Brentford, Porro has started every game and provided an impressive six assists. The 24-year-old’s value has jumped by €5m to €45m and his form could lead to a recall to the Spain squad for Euro 2024.
Cristian Romero was recently labelled ‘the best centre-back in the world’ by Lionel Messi and his value has increased to €65m. Romero is an excellent defender but his disciplinary record remains a cause for concern. The 25-year-old’s sending off against Chelsea was costly and he was fortunate to avoid a similar fate against Newcastle recently. Romero, however, remains one of the best centre-backs in the league and he was an important member of Argentina’s World Cup winning squad.
Tottenham’s top five market value decreases
Eric Dier’s value has dropped to €12m, which is his lowest valuation since 2012. The former England international isn’t favoured by Postecoglou with the Spurs boss preferring to play Emerson at centre-back when Van de Ven and Romero were unavailable.
Ryan Sessengon’s valuation has dropped by €5m as the versatile Englishman hasn’t featured all season after undergoing surgery on a hamstring injury in the summer. Sessengon was valued at €35m when he joined Spurs from Fulham in 2019 but he’s failed to deliver on his undoubted potential.
Rodrigo Bentancur’s injury woes are the reason for his value dropping to €35m. The Urugyuan international is a quality midfield operator and his return from injury was hailed by Postecoglou in October. Bentancur was returning to full fitness when disaster struck against Aston Villa and he sustained an ankle injury that left him facing several months on the sidelines. The former Juventus star has only managed four appearances this season but he will push for a starting berth on his return next year.
Richarlison has provided eight goal contributions across 15 appearances this season but his valuation has still dropped to €35m. The Brazilian international has failed to shine since moving to Spurs in July 2020 for €58m but he’s likely to get the chance to impress under Postecoglou.
Pierre-Emilie Hojberg remains a relatively reliable performer for Spurs but he’s no longer first-choice under Postecoglou in midfield with Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma shining. Hojberg provides experience off the bench and he’s made 16 appearances in the Premier League but the 28-year-old’s value has dropped to €28m.
Tottenham have sixth most valuable squad in English Premier League
Spurs’ squad is the 6th most valuable in the English Premier League at €754.8m and they’ve closed the gap to 5th placed Manchester United by €85.05m. Tottenham's squad value is €76.4m higher than in December 2022 despite the departure of their most valuable asset Kane in the summer.
Tottenham's highest ever valuation was €959.5m in December 2019 just one month after Jose Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettinho. It was the season after Spurs reached the Champions League final against Liverpool with several players enjoying their highest ever valuations. Tottenham's market value will continue to grow if Postecoglou maintains his impressive start in North London and he's expected to be backed in the upcoming transfer window.
