Replacement for Gnabry or Lewandowski? Bayern have bigger plans in store for Mané
Bayern Munich seem utterly intent on signing Liverpool forward Sadio Mané this summer. After having two reported bids rejected by the Anfield club for the 30-year-old star, the Bavarian giants are now set to return with a third bid that should meet the Premier League side's demands. According to BILD, that includes an initial transfer fee of €35 million, with a further €5m in adds on which should amount to the €40m price that Liverpool were holding out for.
Should Bayern manage to get Mané to sign on the dotted line, the Sengal international would likely arrive at the club’s Sabener Straße training ground as the third signing of the summer, following the arrival of Noussair Mazraoui and Ryan Gravenberch from Ajax. But, unlike the aforementioned pair from the Netherlands, Mané would cost a considerable amount of money without a clear spot in the team to slot into.
Haaland, Bellingham & Co. - The most valuable Bundesliga players
Indeed, considering the fact that Mané has spent much of his time at Liverpool playing on either wing, it would mean that the senior forward would arrive in Munich with no less than three players fighting with him for just two wide positions, in Leroy Sane, Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry. So will Mané be simply joining the ranks of Bayern’s wide forwards or do the club have something else in store for their sought-after transfer target?
Mané will help Sané - not replace Lewandowski or Gnabry
While much of the transfer noise around the Allianz Arena this summer seems to be based on whether Robert Lewandowski or Gnabry will leave the club in the coming months, a new report from Sport1 suggests that the pursuit of Mané has nothing to do with the Poland or Germany international’s futures at the club. In fact, it is far more related to another of Bayern’s stars.
According to the German broadcaster, the demand for Mané is actually more to do with the continued inconsistencies of forward Sané, who joined Bayern from Manchester City in 2020 for €60m. Since then, Sané has managed just 24 goals and 27 assists in 89 games for the Bundesliga side, while struggling to develop into a dependable, first-team star under Hansi Flick and now Julian Nagelsmann.
The report states that Bayern have no interest in selling Sané, but believe that the arrival of Mané could be beneficial to the young forward, who could “flourish in the shadows” of the Liverpool star. Sport1 also believe that the sale of Lewandowski and a move from Nagelsmann to play a strikerless formation would not only benefit Sané, but also find a starting role in the team for Mané too.
