There’s little doubt that 2023 has been a truly chaotic year for Chelsea, as the club has had to deal with a huge amount of turmoil on and off the pitch. While the London club still possesses the spending power to match just about any opponent across European football, that hasn’t yet translated into performances and good results. Despite possessing the fifth most valuable squad in the world, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are struggling to stay in the top half of the Premier League this season.

However, while the jury is still out on the club’s tactics under the new ownership, there is some good news in terms of Chelsea’s overall squad market value. Coming in at €999m, Chelsea have the third most valuable squad in England and over the course of 2023 that market value has risen by no less than €134.5m. Only seven clubs in the English top-flight can lay claim to having larger increases in market value over the course of the calendar year.

Chelsea decreases

While Chelsea’s overall squad value has increased in 2023, there are plenty of players that have lost value and are good examples of how the stars at Stamford Bridge have fallen in and out of favour in the last 12 months. Aside from some obvious examples of players losing value due to long-term injuries, such as Wesley Fofana (-€25m to €40m), Reece James (-€15m to €55m) and Ben Chilwell (-€3m to €35m), there are also notable stars that were once signed for big fees but have failed to live up to the hype. This includes Marc Cucurella (-€27m to €29m), Raheem Sterling (-€20m to €50m) and Armando Broja (-€2m to €28m), which suggests that some of the extravagant spending under Todd Boehly & Co. hasn’t all been put to good use.

Chelsea increases

Indeed, such decreases in value should be of some concern to the club as they consider the most recent signings that have arrived in 2023. Due to their large transfer fees, a number of Chelsea’s stars have risen in value dramatically over the past 12 months, such as Moisés Caicedo (+€52m to €90m), Enzo Fernández (+€25m to €80m) and Roméo Lavia (+€25m to €50m). However, if they don’t perform this season, they could see their values drop in 2024 just as the likes of Sterling and Cucurella’s have this year. Despite that, Chelsea’s reputation for developing young talent is still clear for all to see, with two prospects in particular in Ian Maatsen (+€11m to €20m) and Levi Colwill (+€32m to €42m) both making significant jumps in market value due to their promotion to the senior squad.
