Most missed penalties: After third miss in 2020/21 - Ibrahimovic now fourth
"Of course I am angry," Zlatan Ibrahimovic said. "A draw today isn't good enough, we had a lot of chances, and I missed a penalty. Perhaps I let Kessié shoot the next one." The striker was very critical about his own performance. In the 2-2 draw between Milan and Hellas Verona, Ibrahimovic stepped up for the fifth time this season—only two of those ended up being goals. On the list with the most penalty misses since 2000, the 39-year-old is now ranked fourth.
Ibrahimovic has stepped up 92 times throughout his career, 76 times he scored. Sixteen misses, however, is a record that is only "bested" by three players—all three world stars. Roma legend Francesco Totti missed 19 penalties (99 tries), Cristiano Ronaldo (162 tries) and Lionel Messi (126 tries) missed 27 each.
The reason for the high density of top stars at the very top is easy to explain: no other players have made as many attempts from the spot-kick as the four aforementioned players. With a conversion rate ranging from 83.3% (Ronaldo) to 78.6% (Messi), all four are among the best converters in European football, which explains why they are seldomly questioned.
Former Milan star Cassano with worse conversion rate than Ibrahimovic
Franck Kessié, who was suggested by Ibrahimovic to take over the penalty duties, has converted 15 out of 16 tries and is not included in the top 40 of most penalty misses. The worst penalty taker in the top 40 is former Milan star, Antonio Cassano. The Italian managed to convert just 12 out of his 20 penalties—a success rate of just 60%.
