Brenden Aaronson stars in Austrian Klassiker - Salzburg beat Rapid Vienna

Brenden Aaronson was voted the man of the match as Red Bull Salzburg beat Rapid Vienna 2-0 in front of 17,128 fans at the sold-out Red Bull Arena (match stats). Aaronson scored the second goal in the injury time; German national team forward Karim Adeyemi previously scored from the spot in the 79th minute after a lengthy penalty review. 

"Huge win," Aaronson said to Red Bull Salzburg's media team after the game. "It’s a big rivalry, and for us to win and put us three points more ahead is really good." As for the goal? "All the work was done by Noah; he got so much pace and played it to me; it was a great goal." 

Aaronson's goal was the final touch of the game. The American scored after Noah Okafor, who was previously brought on for Adeyemi, won the ball in his own half and, after a sprint over the entire pitch, played it square to Aaronson; he only had to tap the ball across the line. Final one. Aaronson was then voted man of the match. The American playmaker had 42 touches and completed 81.8% of his 22 passes. 

Red Bull Salzburg equalize historic Rapid Vienna record

The win puts Salzburg seven points clear at the top of the table. The Red Bulls also equalized a historical record. Salzburg have now scored 41 games in a row, equalizing a record set by Rapid Vienna between 1983 and 1986. The Mozartstädter will aim to break the record next Saturday when they face Wolfsberger AC.
